As a general rule furniture built pre 80’s is better built and had more style then todays modern
furniture. You can find true bagains at thrift stores if you know what to look for. Be careful of the
price especially if the piece needs to be repaired, refinished or reupholstered. This can add to
the overall price of the piece.

If the piece does need work snap a picture and send it to your local repair shop for an estimate.
This will give you some negotiating room at the thrift store. For instance you don’t want to
spend $500 for a sofa that needs to be reupholstered and find out later it will cost $1800 to
restore it. Often those vintage sofas need the springs retied, joints reglued and all new padding
and fabric. All repairs can be done by an experienced upholsterer but it can be costly. The trick
is to find a vintage piece that only needs to be recovered and at a reasonable price.

On the other hand a master craftsman can take a vintage sofa and restore it, maybe even
update it and add new cushions according to your comfort level and cover it with a modern
fabric to give you a stylish and unique piece of furniture.
